What is an MRI scan and how does it work?

MRI stands for Magnetic Resonance Imaging. It uses a powerful magnetic field and radio waves to create detailed images of the inside of your body — including soft tissues, organs, and the brain — without any ionizing radiation. Unlike X-rays or CT scans, MRI does not expose you to radiation, making it one of the safest imaging technologies available. At Advanced Imaging Reno, our 1.5T Echelon Synergy MRI produces high-resolution images that give radiologists a clear picture of what’s happening inside your body.

Is MRI safe? Are there any risks?

MRI is considered very safe for most people. It uses no ionizing radiation. The main contraindications involve metal implants — such as certain pacemakers, cochlear implants, or metal fragments — that can be affected by the strong magnetic field. You’ll complete a detailed safety screening before your scan to identify any potential concerns. If you have implanted devices, inform our team when you book so we can verify compatibility in advance.

What’s the difference between a screening MRI and a diagnostic MRI?

A screening MRI is a proactive scan — typically covering multiple organ systems — designed to detect hidden conditions before symptoms appear. It’s self-pay and doesn’t require a physician referral. A diagnostic MRI is a targeted scan ordered by a provider to investigate a specific complaint or concern, such as knee pain, a suspected tumor, or neurological symptoms. Does Advanced Imaging Reno use contrast dye for MRI scans?

Our clinical diagnostic MRI scans at Advanced Imaging Reno are non-contrast, meaning we do not use contrast dye (gadolinium). This simplifies your preparation and eliminates the small subset of patients who cannot receive contrast due to kidney issues or allergies. For patients who require contrast MRI, we can discuss options during your consultation.

How do I know which type of MRI I need?

If you’ve been referred by a provider, your referral will specify the type and region of scan needed — that’s a diagnostic MRI. What should I wear to my MRI appointment?

Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing without metal fasteners, zippers, or underwire. You’ll be asked to change into a gown before entering the MRI suite, so what you wear underneath matters less — but avoiding metals (including clothing with metallic threading) makes the process smoother. Leave jewelry, watches, and piercings at home if possible.

Can children get MRIs at Advanced Imaging Reno?

What if I have claustrophobia?

Advanced Imaging Reno uses the Echelon Synergy MRI with a wide 70cm bore — significantly more spacious than traditional MRI machines. Most patients who experience mild to moderate claustrophobia find this machine much more manageable. You’ll also have a call button to pause at any time, and music headphones to help you relax during the scan. How much does an MRI cost at Advanced Imaging Reno?

How quickly will I get my MRI results?

Most reports are returned to you and your referring provider within approximately 3–5 business days. For Whole Body MRI packages that include Combinostics brain analysis, those neurological reports are typically available within 1–3 hours of your scan. You’ll receive a secure link to access your reports for 60 days, and your physician will have indefinite access to your images and reports.

What is Volumetric Quantification and does my scan include it?

Volumetric Quantification is an advanced AI-powered post-processing analysis that measures the density of 133 distinct brain regions and compares results to a large database of age-matched norms. It’s included with our Whole Body MRI Screening and Neuro Screening MRI packages. For clinical diagnostic MRIs, Advanced Imaging Reno accepts Cigna, workers’ compensation, benefit plan administrators, and liens. Our screening MRI packages are self-pay.
